Walter Andrews was born in Philadelphia in 1905 into a family of artists and art dealers. His family included
Howard Newman, an illustrator, and George Newman, a noted landscape painter from Lansdale, Pennsylvania.
The artists grandfather, Adolph, and great uncle, George, founded Newman Galleries in 1865. As a young man, he summered with his family at the New Jersey shore where his fascination with the sea became the subject of many paintings.
